Last Poets Tour [NighTTown - Rotterdam]
I did not have many expactations, simply because I really did not know what to expect… Right now, the day after, it sounds strange that after a night of many words… it is hard to find words to describe this overwhelming experience.
Talkhost Howard Komproe welcomed us and thanked us making the right decision of being there… it would be a rad night…
First performance was by Krewcial and DJ Gus, later assisted by the wonderful Dee. Straight and well-articulated rap, a clear message and a no-nonsense act. In two songs/raps accompanied by Dee. Dee has an appearance and voice that are enchanting… the kind you instantly fall for, at least I did.
Next on the mic was Neske Beks. Never had heard of her before, but the moment she had opened her mouth, she had won me. Beginning with a song that was funny and speaking to the minds of everyone present, the crowd was right at her feet. With roots in Belgium and Africa, but now living in The Netherlands for over 10 years, in the next songs she clearly stated the differences she had experienced and her resistance against the `Belgium suppression`and finally her own revolution. A great voice, very funny, a great performance a cool interaction with the crowd.
Next on was Christine Otten, writer of the book De laatste Dichters. Accompanied by The Trackaddicts, she told her story, her first encounter with The Last Poets and part of later experiences… The combination of the right music and sounds together with her spoken word, created an atmosphere and visual that was very mindspeaking. Respect to what she has done and acieved by getting this tour on the road…
And then… THE LAST POETS. I must confess, I had not heard of them till a few weeks ago. And darn, I have some serious catching up to do…These three man go straight to the soul and even deeper, their words are displaying the bare thruth of what suffering and struggle during the continuous oppression of their peoples. So pure, so from the heart and soul, so clear… Their radiant appearances, combined with mighty voices, loads of humour, great interaction with the crowd and those incredible lyrics… I AM SPEECHLESS. I got to hear more of them, because I am deeply moved…
After a short break came the person who stole my heart recently: Tasha´s World. And again, just like at KoninginneNacht, I am amazed by her performance on stage, her voice and her lyrics. True to Rotterdam as always, simply sooooo cool. Wow, Black Panther, what a song and Raquel (I believe that was her name, Tasha´s backing vocal), she amazed the crowd… Tasha couldn´t but laugh. Sometimes it is hard to describe your feelings but Tasha does something with me…
From the enchanting music a sudden switch to spoken word… without any musical backing: Maarten Das. Maarten is so pure, goes up in his lyrics so much, is driven by an invisible force. His perfomrance consisted of 1 long poem, with just a small break in it… unbelievable how he kept the crowd (me at least) flowing in his waterfall of words and deep message. A true poet of the youngest hour… the saga continues.
And another performances from the The Last Poets… So pure. Some sparring and some more humour, an unbelievalable beautiful and so true poem on LOVE performed solo by Umar Bin Hasaan, a true and pure performance…
The night was finalized by a bouncing performancfe of the TrackAddicts, joined on the dancefloor by all previously named artists and the audience. That was also something this night, because of being in a small stage-area toghether with all the artists, the involvement is incredible!
Again I have to say: The night was overwhelming, brought me to a new level and showed me new things… Enriching to summarize it all.
Peace! Let the message of The Last Poets live on!
